Catherine Hart is passionate about art. She grew up surrounded by it. Her mother, a graphic designer and watercolorist, encouraged Catherine to refine her talents and urged her to enter art competitions. Since Catherine attended an excellent public school system in Lexington, Massachusetts, she had ample opportunities to submit artwork to contests. As early as third grade, Catherine won a national contest for a book club poster, and in high school her logo design took first place for a local art competition. In addition, Catherine’s interest in art and culture intensified during frequent trips abroad. During high school, Catherine participated on two art-related field trips to England, and spent nearly a month in France on an exchange with a family with whom she maintains a relationship.
Though Catherine continued to be interested in fine art, her educational career led her on a different journey. At the University or Massachusetts-Amherst, Catherine focused her studies in English literature and the classics. The summer after she graduated from college, she spent two months in Italy, assisting in the excavation of an Etruscan site in Tuscany, a program through Cornell University. The following year, she earned her Masters at Tufts University for teaching English, and continued her studies of classics at Harvard University and Boston University. She has been a Latin teacher for sixteen years, and continues to be captivated by other disciplines of humanities, but her odyssey has recently brought her back to the pursuit of fine arts.
Since 2009, she has begun to study painting with earnest. Her instructors include world-renowned painter Giovanni Decunto and portrait artist Edwina Caci. She has also taken classes at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She studied under the guidance of John Kilroy for a year, and currently she is enrolled at The Academy of Realist Art-Boston. She has continued to study multiple media and art history during frequent travels to Italy and adventures in Greece with her Latin students and/or her husband.
Catherine prefers to work in oil on various kinds of supports of various sizes.
